Legend of the Christmas Rose

Christmas is a few days away and christians around the world are celebrating the birth of Jesus so what better time to chronicle the charming tale of the Christmas Rose.

Legend has it that a little shepherd girl named Madelon was tending her sheep one cold December night when Wise Men and other shepherds passsed by bearing gifts for the Newborn King. Madelon too wanted to worship and honor the Christ Child but she had no gifts to take to the manger.

She had searched for flowers all over the countryside but there was not even a single bloom to be found. Standing outside the stable where Jesus had been born, Madelon wept wishing that she had a gift to offer the infant. An angel watching over saw Madelon crying and took pity upon her. The angel caused the snow to vanish at her feet revealing a beautiful rose, formed by the tears that had fallen from the eyes of the little shepherdess.

The angel then whispered in her ear that these Christmas roses are more valuable than any myrrh, frankincense or gold for they are pure and made of love. Overjoyed, Madelon presented the flowers to the Holy Infant…her gift of the Christmas Rose.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Rose Color Meanings 101: A Brief Introduction!

While every flower has a story to tell, roses are the one special flower capable of delivering messages that words alone cannot convey.  Roses stand alone in their abundant history and color meanings.

Although roses are the most popular flowers in the world today, in ancient times they were quite sacred and rare.  Ancient Greeks and Romans associated roses with their goddesses of love while ancient Egyptians formed wreaths of roses to honor deceased loved ones.

The language of flowers bloomed during the strict Victorian era.  Innocent bouquets were used by lovers to exchange passionate messages and each rose color expressed a different emotion.  Even the most intricate message could be shaped into a floral arrangement.

When you are looking to convey your love, gratitude or respect with a bouquet, a little knowledge of time-honored rose color meanings will go a long way!

I titled this entry, “A Brief Introduction” because I didn’t want to scare anyone away by referring to it as a history lesson.

Best Regards until next time!
